Authorised Pastoral Assistants (APAs) are trained and authorised to engage in pastoral ministry on behalf of the local church, working as part of a team of clergy and laity. All Authorised Pastoral Assistants focus on pastoral care, but an individual’s ministry varies according to their gifts and skills, and the local situation.

Anna Chaplaincy is a specialist ministry alongside the Authorised Pastoral Assistants scheme. The name Anna Chaplain was chosen to recall Anna, the widow and faithful older person in Luke’s gospel who, together with Simeon, recognised the baby Jesus as the Messiah and the fulfilment of God’s promises.
It is increasingly recognised that older people thrive when their spiritual well-being is cared for alongside their physical, mental and social needs. Anna Chaplaincy has a clear focus on older people and people living with dementia, and it provides further training to equip people to minister within their communities.

Authorised Worship Assistant
An Authorised Worship Assistant (AWA) is, within his or her own benefice, able to assist the incumbent with the Ministry of the Word and in conducting worship.
This might involve planning and delivering a Service of the Word, an act of All Age Worship, Morning or Evening Prayer, or assisting at some other service. This may be in the context of traditional church or a Fresh Expression.
Authorisation allows the person to take the lead in an act of worship, assist with the administration of Communion, and/or deliver the Ministry of the Word through a talk or address. Authorisation will be by letter from the appropriate Bishop, for a period of three years and on the joint recommendation of the incumbent and PCC.
