The Bishop of Norwich’s refugee fund supports refugees who are resettled to Norfolk. Donations made from March 2022 may be used to support refugees of any nationality.

“The appalling plight of refugee families fleeing conflicts from around the world is always deeply moving. This fund has given small grants to help with welcoming refugees from Syria and Afghanistan, and is now extended to cover those fleeing from other conflicts too. It does not duplicate the support that is provided by the Government or other charities but looks for ways to help refugees settle and become more independent. Examples have been buying TV licences that help families learn English and understand British culture and entertainment, providing English language classes, and offering bicycles. Your generous support, in loving our suffering neighbours as Jesus asks of us, would be hugely appreciated. Thank you.”

Bishop's Garden Family Party

Each year, the Bishop of Norwich hosts a garden party and welcomes hundreds of refugee families who have found sanctuary in Norfolk.

The families enjoy a bring-and-share lunch, with music, crafts and games for the children and a chance to chat and relax for the adults.

In 2026, welcoming his guests, Bishop Graham said: “The city of Norwich has long been a place of sanctuary and I hope you feel welcome this afternoon and as you build your lives in this city and the county of Norfolk.”

The garden party is organised by Norfolk County Council’s ‘People From Abroad’ team which works with refugees who came to Norfolk as part of one of the government-approved resettlement schemes.

A member of the team said: “Many of our clients are isolated and this is such a lovely place for people to meet each other. It’s brilliant that the bishop lets us use his garden; it’s a safe and happy place.”

Guests had fled countries including Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Somalia and Syria.

Games and activities for the children were run by organisations including the Mothers Union and an ice cream van was a popular addition to the garden on a very hot afternoon.

Prayer for refugees

Almighty and merciful God,
whose Son became a refugee and had no place to call his own;
look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger,
homeless and hungry.
Bless those who work to bring them relief;
inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts;
and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
